FutureDash Energybuddy the small, easy-to-use and stylish gadget, connects to your home network, helps monitor and manage in-home electricity usage. It also allows you to control smart plugs and appliances in your home via your computers, smartphones and tablets. With unigue glowing 'red, yellow, green' translucent top, Energybuddy tells you at a glance whether your consumption is over or under-budget. My contribution to Energybuddy project is conceiving the gadget form factor with translucent top that is also a stylish ventilation for heat generated inside the box. I was responsible for concepts, electro-mechanic design, prototyping/testing, graphic design, and package design. The product was released in 2012 CES and Engadget.com

This is a design collaboration with Clinique in the U.S. to create a solution for dual lip balm in a single packaging. The shape is inspired by the prevailing French macaroon. Each of the 2 covers contains product and they sandwich a central connector, which locks 2 covers together with 3 bayonet locks per side. The sophisticated locking features on the connector are deliberately designed to be formed by shut-off mold action to lower the molding cost.
RiN in its physical form is a 2-finger ring equipped with health tracking function.
When the display is hidden, the top cover is like a polished gem stone.
Whereas the display is on by pressing the button, the time and health data can be seen through the translucent top cover.
It is a wearable Internet of Thing (IoT) health tracker designed for unobtrusive and intuitive use.
It fits neatly to fingers just as a ring does.
A clean and fusion style is bestowed on this vial holder with the aim to reduce the part count to only one. This design implements DFA (Design for Assembly) details inside the vial holder design. It is a one-piece clamshell-like injection-molded part in which 3 individual components – cap, back cover and front cover – are connected together. The vial will first be anchored in the receiver formed by back cover and cap, and then the cap can be broken away from the connectors to the back cover. Finally, the front cover swing back 180 degree to snap into the back cover and to secure the vial. The loop above the pump overcap can provide not only the protection from accidental pumping but also a hole for being clipped onto a key chain, carabiner hook, etc.
Disposable Nano-tip Holder
As nanotechnology is being applied to the skincare products, this innovative design allows the disposable head with tiny nano-tips to mount on a holder. The nano-tips can touch the deep level of skin for massaging and removing under-skin fat deposits. Different configurations, materials, and surface finishings of the holder and the head were explored to determine the optimal contour of the holder.
Avon Electric Makeup Applicator
Using advanced surface modeling techniques in Solidworks to create these 3 design concepts for Avon’s Electric Makeup Applicator. The mockup and prototypes were built in the development process for ergonomic testing to ensure they fit comfortably in a user’s hand. Each applicator houses a vibrating motor and 2 disc lithium batteries with one-touch button operation. The button is bi-injection molded in craytonor or TPE (santoprene) onto the handle to create a smooth dust-resistant surface. Some surfaces of the handles are textured to provide the good grip on the handles.
This Video Converter was designed for VXIS a subsidiary of D-Link.
The housing of the Video Converter is an Aluminum case which performs better in heat dissipation and electromagnetic interference shielding. It is then sandwiched by clear polycarbonate top and bottom covers.
By utilizing such material, the beauty of the refracted lights and housing structures inside the clear cover and base are revealed.
The high-end audio-video product image as well as trendy Techno-style form language are exemplified and thus celebrated in this design.
As more ladies are using makeup apps on their iPhone, this product is a compliment to iPhone and makeup users. Through the user observation and user feedbacks, we conceived an idea that combines an iPhone case and a slider compact to meet the need of doing makeup on-the-go. The design iteration comprises ideation, engineering, prototyping, detail design, analysis on competitive products and CMF study.

I have engaged in various front-end user experience research projects which cover: • Utilizing human-centered research methods - ethnographics, user observation, online survey and user-participatory workshop to identify latent user needs and gain insights at the fuzzy front end of product development. My tasks includes but are not limited to:

I designed this 2-pieced case for carrying iPhone in the front enclosure and an extra pocket in back for iPhone accessories or wallets. The design involves with conception, detailing and mechanical engineering for side-action molding on the main body part for the case.
The system, 1995 IDSA/IDEA Award-winning design, is a work surface with harmonious hybrid of the old and new media, includeing a flat touch screen, cable managing modules, a mobile telephone, a CD reader, a video camera, a stylus, a document processor, and speakers. The all-in-1 Doc Processor for
copying, faxing, scanning, and printing, streamlines image processing. The Doc Processor emulates the paper flow through the all-in-one printers on its document inputs and paper output trays. It anchors on an array of cable management modules, which allow the document processor to connect with other desktop IT products
MyDTV for NeoVideo is a portable personal HDTV with a built-in digital antenna and a memory card slot. It is also controllable by remote. The requirements by NeoVideo include the unit can be stand alone on a flat surface for watching video and the enclosure must be compact and fit comfortably into a user's palm. I managed to add elegant curve-linear surface and thus to transcend MyDTV image into a high-end forward-looking one while ensuring the handheld area fit the contour of a user's hands.

I envision a scenario based on biking aficionado's need for a iPhone holder on a bicycle - an iPhone in a case that can be easily attached to a bracket on handle bar for a bike ride, and then detached after the ride. Multiple form-fit details such as screwing, bayonet locks, and snap-in fit have been explored to achieve the optimal functionalities of protection, portability, and shock resistance. The design also is aimed at keeping part count low and cost down.
Victoria's Secret rollerball fragrance is designed for the glamour girl on-the-go - Roll on skin to pulse points for a swipe of instant sexy scent and recap with the glamorous cap. I tweaked bow design from 3D-scanned CAD model in Geomagic Freeform Plus to make it moldable and combined it in Solidworks with rollerball’s overcap. Then I added the mechanical, structural and packaging details to the cap that can seal the rollerball on the bottle.
This is a sustainable concept design made for a Clinique's perfume vial. Clinique needs to repackage a tube-like vial in a way that thus when a customer uses up the perfume she can replace the vial and reuse the packaging. I proposed a stylish vial holder that by simply removing the cap a customer can pull out and insert the new vial in the holder. As a translucent body molded in Surlyn wraps around the
vial tube, the level of perfume can be easily visible from outside.
Designed for Ed Hardy, Skulls & Roses, a new masculine and feminine fragrance duo launched in 2012 is inspired by best known symbol of Ed Hardy’s brand - skull & rose tattoo design. This unforgettable fragrance comes in a distinctive black or white skull bottle with a red rose. A skull 3D surface model was painstakingly stitched together, repaired, and converted into a water-tight solid model with a split for overcap and bottle. Surfacing modeling techniques are heavily employed to achieve a precise internal volume and the desired snap-in details between inner and outer caps. The cap conforms to the step and ramp on neck area of the bottle, and thus the cap can be easily aligned with bottle when capped.
